Osteopathy is a Health Science that treats the body as the functional unit. Founded by Dr. Andrew Taylor Still in 1874, it takes into consideration all of the body's systems (nervous, circulatory, digestive, reproductive, etc.) and realizes the body has an inherent ability to heal itself. This enables the practitioner, through hands on palpation, to accurately assess the cause of the patients concerns instead of chasing symptoms. Once the cause has been identified, manual manipulation will help restore the body's normal function and alignment. Both acute and chronic injuries can be successfully treated by an Osteopathic Manual Practitioner.
Athletic Therapy is a Health Science that, in a clinical setting, focuses more on the injury assessment and rehabilitation of injuries via the musculoskeletal system. A main focus of Athletic Therapy is prevention of reinjury. This is often acheived through work or sport specific exercise programs and may also include bracing or taping of the injured area. Athletic and non athletic injuries can be successfully treated by an Athletic Therapist.
